1. Auckland Zoo: A World of Wildlife in the Heart of the City
Auckland Zoo, an award-winning destination, is a must-visit for any animal enthusiast.
Situated in the heart of the city, this zoo is a sanctuary for over 135 different species, making it one of the most diverse wildlife havens in New Zealand.
During our family visit, we were captivated by the wide array of animals, from the playful primates to the majestic big cats. The beautifully landscaped grounds of the zoo provided a delightful backdrop for our exploration.
The zoo also offers interactive experiences, such as behind-the-scenes tours and animal encounters, which were particularly engaging for our children.
The zoo now features 5 distinctive tracks:
- South America Rainforest Track
- Australia Bush Track
- South East Asia Jungle Track
- Te Wao Nui (New Zealand natives)
- Africa Safari Track.
It’s recommended to start from the furthest track – the South America Rainforest – and work your way back, so you can hit the major points of interest while the kids are still fresh and energised.
Although, during our visit, we found ourselves happily distracted and ended up following the crowd and ditching the map altogether!
The otters, playfully chewing blocks of ice on the hot summer day were the first to greet us.
We spotted a red panda high up in a tree, observed lemurs feeding, and saw Australian native animals chilling.
Alligators were in stealth mode, lizards and iguanas in camouflage, and cheeky tamarins grooming each other.
Some animals, like the lions and cheetahs, were sleeping.
One of our favourite moments was getting up close with the orangutans.
Their hammocks looked so cosy that we all wished we could be orangutans at Auckland Zoo for a day!
Our kids were especially fascinated with the baboons’ red bums and the Asian elephants.
Overall, we felt Auckland Zoo had done an incredible job bringing in such a diverse range of mammals, birds, and ectotherms.
The zoo also features kids’ play areas and interactive activities spread out around the zoo.
The main playground is near Te Puna Café, where most people choose to relax, replenish, and rest.
How long should you spend at Auckland Zoo?
For families with older children who can navigate the zoo at a faster pace, you might be able to complete your tour of Auckland Zoo in under 3 hours.
We spent just over 4 hours exploring the zoo with our 2 children under the age of 5.
But hey, what’s the rush? We could happily spend the entire day there, letting the kids enjoy the play areas while getting our peace and quiet, surrounded by the zoo’s wild wonders.
There are plenty of shade and picnic areas in Auckland Zoo if you wish to bring your own lunch and snacks.
Alternatively, there’s a café in every track where you can top up on food and drinks. However, most of them have limited items on the menu, and they’re mostly fried food.
Te Puna Café has the most variety of food, and you can fill up your water bottle there with refreshingly cool water.

- Whetapunga Café near the entrance
- Te Puna Café – the main café where you can see playful orangutans.
- The Watering Hole Café near Asian elephants and flamingoes. This is also a great place for some water play. So don’t forget to bring togs and a set of change of clothes.

After your visit to Auckland Zoo, take a leisurely stroll at Western Springs, just steps away from the zoo.
This is one of the most beautiful large parks in the city, where hundreds of geese, ducks, and birds call it home.

Inside the Seahorse Kingdom, you’ll find a variety of seahorses, pipefish, and other unusual marine creatures.

We spent around 2 hours exploring Kelly Tarlton with a toddler, but the duration can vary depending on your interest level and the ages of your children.
The aquarium is a fantastic place to learn about marine life, so take your time and plan your visit around Feed & Talk Times.
Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium is conveniently situated near one of Auckland’s most family-friendly areas – Mission Bay.
This popular seaside suburb offers a great selection of eateries and a beautiful beachfront.
On weekends, the fountain is on display, and the large playground is busy, creating a bustling beachside ambience to relax and enjoy the rest of your afternoon.
