Our Honest Thoughts on Goat Island

Goat Island has become quite a popular destination, and I feel it’s only fair to share our family’s experience, even if it might differ from the general hype.

While many praise Goat Island for its beauty, our visits have been a bit of a mixed bag.

During peak seasons, the beach can become quite crowded, and finding a spot for our beach tent has often been a challenge, as you can see in the photos.

On hot summer days, the sand may be too hot to stand or sit on comfortably, and the beach is not the cleanest either (in New Zealand standard).

The water was murky during each of our visits. Although we understand that visibility can vary with the weather and tides, it seems that luck just isn’t on our side when we visit Goat Island.

That said, we loved the tourist vibes there, but our family prefers a much quieter and more spacious beach with clean, smooth sand.

However, don’t let our experience deter you from visiting Goat Island. We probably just had our fair share of bad luck with the weather, and I do hope you’ll experience Goat Island in all its glory.

A long weekend away at Pakiri has quickly become a family tradition for us. Every summer, we book a couple of nights at this holiday park that sits right by the water. It’s a little paradise for families with young kids and a perfect way to extend the adventure beyond Goat Island.

Whangateau Reserve

Whangateau Reserve is another little hidden gem, particularly loved by locals. With a playground on site and very calm waters, it’s the perfect place for kids to play.

Unlike the bustling atmosphere of Goat Island, Whangateau Reserve offers a tranquil spot that provides ample outdoor space for family enjoyment. It’s a place where you can truly unwind, away from the crowds, and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area.

So pack a picnic, set up a beach tent, and relax here for the afternoon. And if you’re in the mood for camping, the well-maintained campground offers all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay.

Matheson Bay Reserve

Matheson Bay Reserve, nestled not far from Goat Island, offers a serene escape that’s perfect for families with young children. Similar to Whangateau Reserve, Matheson Bay features a playground and calm beach, making it a suitable spot for a family day out. The gentle waves and inviting sands provide a safe environment for the little ones to play, while the adults can relax and soak in the natural beauty.

But there’s more to discover at Matheson Bay Reserve. If you’re in the mood for a brief exploration, take a stroll up the hill near the playground on the eastern side of the Reserve. There, you’ll find a hidden lookout offering a panoramic view of the coast.

Ti Point Wharf & Reptile Park

Ti Point Wharf is a picturesque spot known for fishing.

It’s a place where you can teach the little ones how to cast a line or simply enjoy the stunning coastal views.
