It’s not hard to find a beautiful beach in New Zealand, but a beach with an estuary with clean, warm, shallow waters that barely brush your knees is hard to come by.
This is a perfect swimming spot for families with children, providing a safe haven for the little ones to frolic in the water.
You can lay out a beach tent or spread a picnic blanket, all while watching the kids mould sandcastles and make a splash.
It’s the perfect nook for you to relax, dive into a good read, or just bask in the sunshine.
And whenever the mood strikes, you can hop into the action or take a refreshing dip in the deeper ends.
Top 6 Activities To Do at Pakiri
1. Finding Pipis At Low Tide
One of the unique attractions of Pakiri Beach is the abundance of pipis that can be found during low tides.
These small, edible clams are a local favourite.
You can gather the kids together to collect them and later cook up a seafood spaghetti or salad back at your accommodation.
We particularly enjoyed a family meal during our stay at Pakiri Beach Holiday Park, which features a spacious kitchen and full amenities.
You may need to soak them for a few hours in fresh cool water to expel any sand.

If you’re keen to try out water sports, you can bring your own paddleboards and kayaks or hire them from Pakiri Beach Holiday Park.

One of our fondest memories at Pakiri Beach Holiday Park is stargazing outside our tent.
We would stretch out on our blankets, allowing our eyes to adjust to the silvery light of the moon. Slowly, stars would begin to appear in the sky, flickering like gems in the night’s canopy.
We would point out constellations, look for shooting stars, and share stories with our kids about the universe.
It was a magical experience, a moment of connection not just with each other, but with the universe.

While Pakiri Beach offers plenty of activities, there’s also a wealth of attractions in the surrounding area for those keen to explore further.
Goat Island
Just a short drive from Pakiri, Goat Island is known for its marine reserve, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join a snorkelling or diving tour.
Alternatively, if you prefer to stay dry, take a glass-bottom boat tour or if you’re up for an adventure, Clearyak in Leigh is a unique kayaking experience that allows you to explore the Goat Island Marine Reserve through clear kayaks, a perfect way to see the marine life below for the little ones.
For those who appreciate diving at one of the world’s first marine reserves, Goat Island Diving Trip is a must-do.

This is one of our family’s favourite destinations for a day trip from Auckland.
The Matakana Farmers Market is open every Saturday and it’s a great place to sample local produce, enjoy delicious food, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere.
If you’re an oyster lover, make sure to head up the road to Matakana Oysters to indulge in some of the freshest and most succulent oysters around.
Just remember to check their opening times, as they may vary in the off-season. And don’t miss out on their oyster soup in the winter – it’s a must-try!
While in Matakana, try Artisan Picnic with DIY Paint Experience, a very unique experience, especially if you have little artists in the family!

Take a day trip to Kawau Island with Royal Mail Run Kawau Cruises. You can explore the island, enjoy a picnic, or simply relax.
The cruise departs early, so make sure to plan ahead!
There is a cafe on the island and a few easy hikes that take you up the hill for a panoramic view of the island.

Although our family has somewhat outgrown the typical holiday park experience in recent years, Pakiri Beach Holiday Park remains an affordable and comfortable option for a short stay.
For families who still savour the camping experience and are on the hunt for budget-friendly holidays, we can’t recommend this holiday park enough.
It’s a place where kids can freely be kids, and adults can unwind and reconnect with nature.
