If you’re looking for a place to stay around Goat Island, but don’t want to pay top dollar among the tourists, we’ve got you covered in the post below.

Now, sit back, relax and let’s get started.

The Joy of Shallow Waters at Pakiri Beach

One of our family’s favourite natural wonders at Pakiri Beach is the estuary.

It’s not hard to find a beautiful beach in New Zealand, but a beach with an estuary with clean, warm, shallow waters that barely brush your knees is hard to come by.

This is a perfect swimming spot for families with children, providing a safe haven for the little ones to frolic in the water.

You can lay out a beach tent or spread a picnic blanket, all while watching the kids mould sandcastles and make a splash.

It’s the perfect nook for you to relax, dive into a good read, or just bask in the sunshine.

And whenever the mood strikes, you can hop into the action or take a refreshing dip in the deeper ends.

Top 6 Activities To Do at Pakiri

1. Finding Pipis At Low Tide

One of the unique attractions of Pakiri Beach is the abundance of pipis that can be found during low tides.

These small, edible clams are a local favourite.

You can gather the kids together to collect them and later cook up a seafood spaghetti or salad back at your accommodation.

We particularly enjoyed a family meal during our stay at Pakiri Beach Holiday Park, which features a spacious kitchen and full amenities.

You may need to soak them for a few hours in fresh cool water to expel any sand.

2. Water Sports at Pakiri

If you’re keen to try out water sports, you can bring your own paddleboards and kayaks or hire them from Pakiri Beach Holiday Park.

And if you’re new to these water sports, no worries! The calm waters at Pakiri are perfect for children and beginners.

3. Bird-Watching

Pakiri Beach is a haven for native birds, with many choosing to nest along the shorelines.

This makes it a fantastic spot for bird-watching.

4. Fishing for Fun

If you’re looking to get away from the crowd, Pakiri Beach has a fantastic fishing spot, especially around where the river flows into the sea.

Even for a first-timer, you’ll appreciate the peace and quiet, and the thrill of catching a fish.

5. Exploring Rock Pools

Walking along Pakiri Beach, you can find anemones in the rock pools. This is a simple and fun activity to enjoy with kids who are interested in marine life.

They can explore these miniature ecosystems and learn about the various creatures that inhabit them.

6. Star Gazing

As the day comes to a close at Pakiri Beach, the sky transforms into a vibrant canvas filled with oranges, pinks, and purples.

This stunning sunset always makes us pause and appreciate the beauty of nature.

It’s one of those simple joys – a quiet moment to reflect.

When night falls, the clear skies above Pakiri provide an unobstructed view of the cosmos. The Milky Way stretches across the sky, showcasing a dazzling display of stars that never fails to leave us in awe.

One of our fondest memories at Pakiri Beach Holiday Park is stargazing outside our tent.

We would stretch out on our blankets, allowing our eyes to adjust to the silvery light of the moon. Slowly, stars would begin to appear in the sky, flickering like gems in the night’s canopy.

We would point out constellations, look for shooting stars, and share stories with our kids about the universe.

It was a magical experience, a moment of connection not just with each other, but with the universe.
