Getting to Waiheke Island

There are two ferry operators that connect Auckland to Waiheke Island. In a nutshell:
- ✗ no car on board Fullers 360
- ✓ car on board Sealink
How long is the ferry ride?
Waiheke Island is a short 40-minute ferry ride away from Auckland Downtown.
The ferry ride is very much a sightseeing cruise on its own, so 40-minute doesn’t seem long at all.
Fullers 360
Fullers 360 is the most popular ferry to Waiheke Island for tourists and passengers without a car.
You’re welcome to bring a stroller, bicycle or e-bike onboard.
There are three decks on Fullers altogether.
The top deck is completely open-air with 360° panoramic views of Auckland city coastline, Rangitoto, and nearby islands.
There is a café and toilet facility on board.

If you know your travel dates and they are fixed, pre-book a reserve ticket for a few dollars off!
Be sure to apply sunscreen if you plan to sit on the top deck, as your hat might blow away in strong winds, and the UV rays can be quite harsh.

If you’re planning a longer stay on Waiheke Island, especially if you’re travelling with a young child, we recommend bringing a car.
There are car hire services on the island, but in case you prefer to bring your own vehicle, travel with Sealink.

If you decide to take the hop-on hop-off bus on the island, you can get both the ferry and bus tickets.

During peak times, do expect long waits for the Explorer bus as it usually runs at capacity on the weekends.
Tours Departing from Auckland to Waiheke Island
If you prefer to keep things simple, booking a tour from Auckland to Waiheke Island is a great option.
Many tours include ferry tickets, guided activities, and even visits to vineyards or beaches, making it easy to relax and enjoy the day without worrying about logistics.

Getting Around the Island
There are a number of options to get around on Waiheke Island.
Depending on how much time you have on the island and how you want to pace yourselves.

- Take a hop-on hop-off bus with Waiheke Explorer
- Hire a scooter with Island Scoot

Waiheke Island Buses
Fares
You’ll need an AT HOP card to pay for buses on Waiheke, as cash and credit cards are not accepted.
You can purchase a HOP card at the Downtown Ferry Terminal or the ferry building at Matiatia.
Schedule
The 50A and 50B buses run alternately, providing connections approximately every 15 minutes from 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week (less frequently outside these times).
So expect waiting time or grab a bus timetable.
Routes
There are 3 main routes, the popular Onetangi Beach (including must-visit vineyards like Stonyridge), Rocky Bay (including Saturday Ostend Market), and Palm Beach.
You may have to change buses to get to your destination.
