Auckland is a diverse city where almost any cuisine you desire is at your fingertips without the need to travel far.

After a day at the beautiful Matakana Coast, we all had the urge for Thai food on this particular evening.

We turned to Google and chose to dine at Papaya Thai Restaurant in Albany, Auckland, New Zealand.

Thai food is something we adore, but we usually opt for casual takeaways, with Pad Thai being our go-to dish.

Today was different; we had a guest with us and wanted to treat her to something special. Papaya Thai seemed the perfect venue for this.

The photos of Papaya Thai Restaurant appeared impressive online, but the restaurant’s interior was even more magnificent. The grandeur caught us by surprise, and we suddenly felt a tad under-dressed.

Ambience & Decor

Papaya Thai Restaurant in Albany, Auckland, New Zealand, transports you directly into the heart of Thailand with its stunning decor. Walking into this restaurant, you are immediately surrounded by traditional Thai ornaments and decorations meticulously placed in two spacious dining areas.

The dimmed, warm lighting paired with a sophisticated gold colour theme creates an atmosphere that’s both cosy and elegant. Whether you’re seated at a table or ensconced in a private booth, you’ll feel as though you’ve been welcomed into a Thai palace for a fleeting moment.

Service at Papaya Thai

We were greeted by a member of staff who seemed to be either the owner or the manager of the restaurant. He was incredibly thoughtful, seating us at the back by a row of cushioned seats against the wall. With us were a one-year-old and a four-year-old.

Arriving early in the evening, we were informed that the staff were getting ready and would present the menus shortly. However, as our children began to grow a tad restless, we found ourselves needing to ask to be served once more.

Promptly, the manager provided us with the menus and, upon request, brought out plastic cups and plates for the children.

Shortly thereafter, another staff member, who spoke fluent English, was ready to assist. She inquired if we needed a high chair for our baby and kindly set it up for us. To my surprise, the high chair was spotless.

Papaya Thai Food

We had a brief look at the menu online and were impressed with the food selections. For starters, we chose softshell crab, followed by sizzling beef and fish as our main courses.

After waiting a while for our food, the soft shell crab arrived, proving so delicious and loved by every member of the family that we ordered two more. Our preschooler didn’t hesitate to claim the whole plate for herself, relishing the crab as if she’d missed lunch.

The sizzling beef arrived sizzling on the hot plate, and it was rich and full of flavour.

As for the fish, its presentation was beautiful. We anticipated it to be crispy, but it wasn’t — perhaps the sauce had softened the skin. Most of the fish meat had been carved out and cooked separately, then artfully placed back on the fish as a decorative element.

In the end, our visit to Papaya Thai Restaurant offered a culinary journey filled with flavour and authenticity.

While I wouldn’t describe the portion sizes as generous, the dishes were rich in flavours.
