LYRICS

We grew up sharing secrets
Running wild through childhood streets
Then life pulled us in different directions
New cities, new worlds, new dreams
But somehow we stayed connected
Across oceans, across it all
Even when we go months without talking
You still answer when I call

And every time we meet again
It feels like we never left
One laugh and we’re right back
In the space we’ve always known

You make distance small
Like we’re still down the hall
Even when I’m in winter
And you’re chasing summer’s fall
Miles fade away
When I hear your name
Through Christmas lights and Thanksgiving nights
You make distance small

I kept all your letters
Your photos in a box of gold
And when the world gets heavy
Your words still make me feel whole
Friends come and go so quickly
But you’re the one who stays
Snow or rain, year by year
You show up anyway

When life tries to pull us apart
You hold the line so strong
Even when I lose myself
You help me carry on

You make distance small
Like we’re still down the hall
Even when I’m in winter
And you’re chasing summer’s fall
Miles fade away
When I hear your name
Through Christmas lights and Thanksgiving nights
You make distance small

When others disappear
You stay
When I’m falling apart
You stay
No matter which continent I’m on
You’re the constant in my song
In this life, and the next lifetime
I know we still belong
Side by side
Heart to heart
Even worlds apart

You make distance small
Like no distance at all
Through the years, through the seasons
You’re the one I always call
Miles fade away
When I hear your name
Through Christmas lights and Thanksgiving nights
You make distance small

BFF forever, forevermore

Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, I feel a wave of gratitude for a childhood friend across the ocean.

It’s something I’ve never really said out loud, but it has always lived deep in my heart.

You Make Distance Small is a dedication to that friend, and a celebration for anyone lucky enough to have a friendship that lasts across time and distance.

It was inspired by a memory of being 6 again, carrying tiny backpacks, sharing secrets in playground corners, and having a best friend who stayed steady through every stage of growing up.

In Grade 6, life pulled us apart to different cities, different countries, and different continents.

Over the years, we wrote letters and confided in each other about the awkward phases, the heartbreaks, the wins, and the losses.

We remembered the moments we couldn’t speak of and celebrated the ones we could.

Somehow, we stayed connected through it all and this friendship stretched with us.

Every time we reconnect as adults, it feels like an instant click, as if time has paused just to let us be together again.

These kind of rare friendships hold every version of who we’ve been. They’re the people who know our past and still fit perfectly into our present.

That kind of connection is worth honouring and writing songs about. Because friendships that survive time, distance, and life’s chaos remind us that loyalty still exists — the quiet, steady kind that doesn’t need noise or attention. Just presence in its simplest form.

If you have someone who has been there from childhood until now, through all the highs and lows, this song is for you too.

I hope it takes you back to the moments that made your friendships so special.

And I hope it inspires you to reach out, reconnect, or simply appreciate the friends who make life feel lighter and warmer this Christmas.
