Waiheke Island is a little utopia just a ferry ride away from Auckland.
It has been voted many of the ‘world’s best’ destinations in the past, and for good reason.
With beautiful beaches, boutique vineyards, galleries and cafes, artisan markets, and many scenic hiking tracks, it’s no wonder it is one of the most popular day trip destinations from Auckland.
As a family who loves “sun, sand, and simplicity,” this was our fourth time visiting Waiheke Island with our toddler.
This post below covers everything you need to know about getting to Waiheke Island and getting around the island.
Join us as we share the best beaches and the top things to do on Waiheke Island to help you visualise the perfect day trip.

Top Things To Do on Waiheke Island
With so much to do on Waiheke Island, you can easily spend a week exploring around the island, or you may only want to cover the highlights of the island on a day trip from Auckland.
Either way, you’re likely to fall in love with this slice of paradise and want to return.
Here, we have compiled a list of family-friendly highlights on Waiheke Island that you can potentially cover in one day without needing a car!
The island hosts regular events throughout the year, so be sure to check the official Tourism Waiheke website for detailed information and to plan your visit accordingly.
Oneroa Village & Galleries
As you step off the ferry and make your way into Waiheke Island, Oneroa Village is likely to be your first stop.
Oneroa Village is where you’ll find a mix of restaurants, cosy cafes, boutique shops, and art galleries, perfectly capturing the island’s relaxed yet vibrant character.
From here, you’ll get a real sense of what Waiheke Island is all about.

Oneroa Sunday Market
The Oneroa Sunday Market is a local event that brings together artisan stalls, live music, and a laid-back island vibe.
This market is the perfect spot to discover unique handmade goods, support local creatives, and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
On a sunny day, the market comes alive with music, so whether you’re hunting for a special souvenir, indulging in some local treats, or simply soaking in the vibe, the Oneroa Sunday Market offers a little slice of island life you won’t want to miss.

Saturday Ostend Market
The Ostend Market is a popular Saturday market on Waiheke Island, running until around 1 pm.
You can find boutique clothing stalls on the reserve, organic homemade products, yummy food from a mix of cultures, and live music with great ambience!
It’s one of those places where you can get a true taste of Waiheke Island, which is exactly why we made it a must-visit on a Saturday.

The Best Beaches
Big Oneroa Beach
Oneroa Beach is the closest beach to the town and has a welcoming local atmosphere.
It is an excellent spot for a picnic, although reaching it requires a bit of a downhill walk.
Things may have changed since our visit, but in our honest opinion, the water quality wasn’t the best for swimming.
However, we did enjoy the view and had a lovely sunset dinner by the beach.

Little Oneroa Beach
If you prefer a more secluded beach than the Big Oneroa, Little Oneroa is located at the eastern end of Oneroa.
At low tide, you can walk around the rocks from Big Oneroa to reach Little Oneroa.
Alternatively, there is a grassy track that leads down to the beach from Ocean View Road.
It features a playground and BBQ area, which is much more family-friendly.
Onetangi Beach
Onetangi Beach is one of the most popular beaches on Waiheke Island for tourists.
On a hot day, this long stretch of white sand beach is packed with beach bums.
Bring your lunch and roll out your rugs under the trees for some shade, and don’t forget to slap on some sunscreen!
Alternatively, the Beach Store Café is right opposite the bus stop, you can’t miss it!
Try their famous seafood pizza, and enjoy an ice cream by the beach.

Palm Beach
Palm Beach is a good alternative to escape from the crowd at Onetangi without missing out on the beauty of Waiheke.
You can take the bus directly to Palm Beach from various points, including Matiatia and Oneroa.
There is a playground and a BBQ area around the middle section of the beach.
If you’re travelling with kids, note that the far western end of this beach is a nude beach.
It’s separated from the main beach by rocks, so families can choose to stay at the main section.

Rocky Bay
Rocky Bay is our type of beach and by far our favourite on the island.
But it’s not your typical beach. Rocky Bay, as the name suggests, is covered by shells and rocks, making it a little difficult to walk on.
Despite that, many locals still go for walks and swims here.
This little bay is a hidden sanctuary that is not often advertised or promoted by the media, so very few tourists know about it. You can relax here for hours without getting interrupted.
Rocky Bay is a scenic and peaceful paradise, so take your camera out, because this is the place to take breathtaking instagrammable photos!

If this post has helped you, a cup of coffee is all it takes to make my day. Thanks a latte!
Waiheke Island Vineyards
There are over 30 boutique vineyards on the island, the most popular being Stonyridge, Mudbrick, Cable Bay, Tantalus Estate, and Man O’War vineyards.
Several high-end vineyard restaurants are located in the Onetangi Valley area, which is on the island’s western side.
Alternatively, stop by one of the vineyards along Onetangi Road!

Family-Friendly Vineyards
While wine tasting may be an activity that adults enjoy, many vineyards on Waiheke Island are family-friendly, offering amenities and activities for children.
Here are a few highlights:
- Wild on Waiheke
- Man O’ War Vineyard
- Passage Rock Winery
- Tantalus Estate Vineyard
- The ‘HEKE
- Goldie Estate
- Te Whau Restaurant and Vineyard

Wine Tours
If wine tasting interests you, consider joining a wine tour around Waiheke Island. This way, you can visit many vineyards in one trip.
However, keep in mind that many of these tours are not suitable for those under 18.
The Man O’War vineyard package appears to have no restrictions for those under 18, making it a family-friendly option.

Walking Trails
If you’re visiting Waiheke Island without a car, you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking already.
If hiking interests your family, there are fun ways to experience the island’s natural beauty while enjoying picturesque views and discovering hidden bays along the way.
Waiheke Art Trail
The trail that interested our family the most was the Waiheke Island Art Trail.
The trail is a 3km family-friendly scenic walk with sweeping views and art sculptures, starting from the Matiatia ferry terminal.
The trail takes you along the foreshore and through the Atawhai Whenua bush reserve.
You can find the Art Trail Map here.

Guided Art Tour
Alternatively, you can join this 5-hour guided art tour to discover the best of Waiheke’s arts scene and meet talented artists, with the help of a local guide.

Oneroa to Little Oneroa
Another easy, scenic walk is the Oneroa to Little Oneroa coastal path.
This 30-minute walk is an easy stroll that’s great for younger kids.
You can also extend it into a 2-hour loop if you’re feeling adventurous!
Oneroa to Palm Beach Coastal Walk
This 2-hour stroll is perfect for a lazy afternoon.
It offers stunning coastal views and takes you past beautiful beaches and charming bays.
There are plenty of spots to stop for a picnic or just to admire the scenery.
Orapiu to Pearl Bay
This is a 1-1.5 hour walk that’s super family-friendly.
The trail hugs the coastline, providing breathtaking views of the sea, making it ideal for little legs.
Kids will love exploring the sandy beaches and spotting wildlife along the way.
Hekerua Bay to Palm Beach
This 2-hour walk is another family favourite, combining easy tracks with residential streets.
It’s a lovely way to see Waiheke’s coastal scenery, and both Hekerua Bay and Palm Beach are perfect for a swim or a play at the beach afterwards.
Walk from Vineyard to Vineyard
If you have older children, walking from vineyard to vineyard is honestly the best way to explore Waiheke.
The Te Ara Hura walking network connects many of the island’s best spots, so you can blend nature with a cheeky vineyard stop along the way.
Te Ara Hura Trail
If you’re feeling ambitious, tackle the Te Ara Hura Trail – 100km of interconnected trails through coastal headlands, beaches, forests, and scenic viewpoints.
You don’t have to do it all at once (unless you’re superhuman), but even picking sections like the Rocky Bay walk will treat you to epic views and a great sense of accomplishment.
Guided Coastal Walk
If you prefer a premium guided tour to hike among the beautiful nature of Waiheke Island, there is a small-group walking tour that can be personalised on the day to your interests.

Double Headland Premium Guided Coastal Walk
There are many other hiking opportunities on the island if this is something you enjoy.
Be mindful that being on an island without a car means there will be plenty of walking to do already, and some paths may not be stroller-friendly, so bring a baby carrier with hip seat if your child is too young.
It’s a good idea to break up your day and plan ahead.
