Our Family Experience at Gusto
On a recent evening night, our family found ourselves in Ponsonby, Auckland’s hub of trendy cafes and restaurants, and a food lover’s paradise. Among the best Italian restaurants in Auckland on Ponsonby Road, we bookmarked Prego and Farina Italian restaurants for a visit this Saturday afternoon. However, as we walked past Gusto Italiano, we realised that hunger had struck, the children were growing tired, and the cosy appearance of Gusto Italiano was too inviting to resist.
From the moment we stepped into Gusto Italiano, the rustic decor, combined with the tantalising aroma of freshly prepared dishes, transported us to an Italian trattoria. Complete with a traditional wood-fired pizza oven, this restaurant created a sensory experience that was both comforting and refreshing for our family.
However, with only one staff on shift, we did experience a slight delay in service. That said, our preschooler was provided with a kids’ menu and colouring pens, while my husband took our toddler out for a walk on the bustling street of Ponsonby.
Convinced that pizza would be a highlight, we ordered a Quatro Stagione pizza with artichoke, salami, mushrooms, and ham. Having savoured the thin and soft pizzas that practically melted in our hands at Caffé Centrale in Hamilton, we anticipated a similar wood-fired experience at Gusto Italiano. While the crust was thicker at Gusto Italiano, the pizza was equally flavoursome
As seafood lovers, we also ordered a Spaghetti Frutti Di Mare, mixed seafood spaghetti. The spaghetti was laden with a generous amount of quality seafood, complemented by a sauce rich in flavour.
Our 4-year-old’s eyes lit up when her Nutella Pizza arrived. Surprisingly, the portion for the kid’s pizza was more generous than our other orders at Gusto Italiano. While I found the Nutella Pizza a bit dry, our little girl thoroughly enjoyed it, finishing most of it on her own.
Overall, our dining experience at Gusto Italiano was enjoyable. As we savoured our meal, we couldn’t help but notice the blackboard announcing live opera on an upcoming night, a touch that promises to elevate the atmosphere.
