How to Beat Post Vacation Blues From Home

by Kida

Hey there, I feel you. Post vacation blues is real, and we tend to share the same symptoms – lack of motivation, feeling lost, loss of hope, loss of appetite, and question the purpose of our lives again. You’re not alone.

There are plenty of blog posts out there talking about how to adjust yourself, mentally and physically before, during and after your vacation.

I couldn’t find any effective ways to combat post-vacation blues online. In fact, they made me feel more miserable about life and wishing that I was back on the paradise island.

So in this post, I’m going to share a completely different approach to beating post-vacation blues. It may or may not work for you, but hey, it’s worth a try.

Some popular ideas include changing your sleeping routine, keeping a souvenir close by, going through the photos, printing and framing a photo from the last vacation, and letting time heal your blues.

These may work for some, but I find these methods revolves around denying your reality and present, instead relive your past, until your post-vacation blues fade with time.

Bridging Getaway

The method I’m going to introduce to you came to me by surprise. I call it the Bridging Getaway – A getaway that bridges your perfect satisfying vacation and your mundane life routine. It works by shifting your mind from feeling miserable about your life, to appreciating life and being willing to work.

Plan a local getaway at least a week after your vacation. You don’t want to schedule it straight after coming back home. Otherwise, it’ll just feel like one super long vacation and defeats the purpose of bridging your negative feelings. Give yourself the time to feel the post-vacation blues, let time start the healing process, and plan something to look forward to.

The idea is to plan something local, where your daily activities take place. This will help you set the mood that you’re now back home. For a maximum of 2 days, do something out of the norm and considered a treat.

In the video above, I gave an example of how I spontaneously booked a 5-star hotel close to home, pampered myself with a Thai massage, dined at my favourite restaurant, woke up with a hot buffet breakfast, and enjoyed a hot bath & spa. This is a real treat for me, and I felt very spoiled. As a result, I came home with lots of gratitude towards life, appreciated the special night out, and felt like I owe myself to work hard and earn back my luxury retreat.

Plan Your Next Vacation

Another idea to beat post-vacation blues, is to start planning your next vacation. If you have a trip lined up, or can schedule a holiday in the near future, start doing research. Look at the photos and brochures of your destination, check out all the attractions and activities, and start putting together an itinerary! This helps to motivate you to get through your daily routines, and give you an extra boost to knock out whatever it is that’s stopping you from taking that vacation today.

Distractions

Pick up a new hobby, or a new pet to keep you busy. An occupied mind will have less time to think and feel. Have you always wanted to try something? Tennis, pottery, DIY? Have you always wanted a pet? Rabbit, cat or an aquarium?

Nothing Works?

If nothing works for you, and you’re still feeling down and depressed, perhaps it’s time to evaluate your life. You may be resentful to your job, your location, your environment and the people around you. Ask yourself what is it that you dread every day? Is it your health, work, finance, relationships or something else?
