These majestic peaks, dusted with snow for much of the year, become a winter wonderland, and it’s a change of scenery we look forward to each year.

As Aucklanders, we don’t often see snow, which adds a sprinkle of magic to our family adventures. There’s something truly heartwarming about seeing the kids play with snow.

But Mt Ruapehu and Tongariro offer more than just a chance to play in the snow. Whether we’re hitting the slopes, exploring the trails, or simply savouring a hot chocolate by the fire, there’s a wealth of things to do in Mt Ruapehu.

Skiing and Snowboarding in Mt Ruapehu

Mt Ruapehu offers a range of skiing and snowboarding options that cater to families of all skill levels. The mountain is home to two world-class ski areas – Whakapapa and Turoa, spanning over 1050 hectares of epic terrain.

But the fun doesn’t stop at skiing or snowboarding. There’s a wealth of other things to do in Mt Ruapehu, making it a must-visit destination for families seeking a memorable winter adventure.

1. Whakapapa Ski Area

As New Zealand’s largest ski area, Whakapapa caters to all skill levels.

The dedicated beginner slopes are perfect for kids and adults learning the ropes, while the intermediate and advanced slopes offer more of a challenge for experienced skiers and snowboarders.

For some family-friendly fun, the snow tubing park is a must-visit.

Whakapapa Ski Field is easily accessible via a short drive up the scenic Bruce Road, but be sure to check the weather conditions on the day.

If there are any restrictions, shuttle buses are available from the village.

2. Turoa Ski Area

Turoa is another gem in Mt Ruapehu, known for its long, wide slopes and awe-inspiring views.

The area offers a diverse terrain, with gentle slopes for beginners and challenging black runs for seasoned skiers.

If you’re up for a challenge or want to learn some tricks, the terrain park, equipped with jumps, rails, and boxes, is a must-visit.

Even if you’re not there to ski, Turoa offers a fantastic experience.

Our family enjoyed a leisurely lunch at the café at Turoa Ski Field, where we could sit back and watch advanced skiers skillfully navigate the steep slopes.

It’s a great way to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy the stunning scenery.

Ski and Snowboard Lessons

Both Whakapapa and Turoa Ski Areas at Mt Ruapehu offer ski and snowboard lessons.

The minimum age for ski lessons is 4, while for snowboard lessons, it’s 6.

There are also development programmes available for skiers aged 6-16 and snowboarders aged 8-16.

These lessons and programmes are designed to help individuals improve their skills, regardless of their current level of proficiency.

3. Happy Valley

Remember, skiing and snowboarding aren’t the only things to do in Mt Ruapehu.

Families can also enjoy sledding, snowball fights, and building snowmen. Happy Valley Snow Park at Whakapapa is a fully self-contained learners’ area with designated areas for sledding and tubing.

It’s a safe and comfortable place for kids and adults alike to find their feet on the slopes.

At Happy Valley, you can purchase tickets and sledding passes on the spot, store your bags, rent equipment, and even warm up at the café.

There’s a 1-hour Sledding + Sky Waka combo pass available, which we highly recommend for a full day of fun.

To make the most of your visit to Happy Valley, we recommend arriving early in the morning before it gets too crowded.

This way, you can spend more time sledding and less time waiting in line.

Sleds are included in the pass, and the carpet lift will bring you back up so you can enjoy sledding for the full hour.

To keep your belongings safe, leave your bags in the car or store them at the ticket booth.

One of the most memorable experiences in Mt Ruapehu is a ride on the Sky Waka gondola.

As you ascend the mountain, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of the snow-covered Alps.

The gondola ride is an adventure in itself, offering a unique perspective of the stunning landscape that surrounds you.

This is arguably the most family-friendly activity in Mt Ruapehu, allowing you to enjoy the best views without the hard work of hiking up the mountain – especially handy if you’re travelling with a toddler!

The only thing to keep in mind is to tread carefully – the snowy ground can be a bit slippery!

Spend a Day in Ohakune

5. Ohakune Town Centre

After a long day in Ruapehu, take some time to explore the charming Ohakune town centre.

Ohakune Town Centre is not just a charming place for a leisurely stroll, but it’s also where you can gear up for your snow adventures.

Here, you can hire your snow and ski gear, find cosy restaurants complete with a fireplace, and gather information on Mt Ruapehu and the top things to do in Ruapehu.

If the snowy mountains are not your family’s usual holiday destination, consider hiring the essential winter clothing and gear from a local shop like the Ski Shed in Ohakune.

It’s all about making your trip as comfortable and enjoyable as possible without breaking the bank.

Alternatively, you can get one of these quality ski jackets.

It’s cold up the mountains, but not as cold as you’d think, especially during the summer months.

6. Rimu Walk

Just a stone’s throw away from The Powderhorn Chateau, you’ll find the Rimu Walk, also known as the Mangawhero Forest Walk on Google Maps.

The Rimu Walk is stroller-friendly and takes about 15 minutes return. It’s a little hidden gem that makes a nice pre-dinner walk among the giant rimu trees, especially if you’re staying in Ohakune.

If you have more time and feel like exploring further, you can continue onto the Mangawhero Forest Walk after crossing the Mangawhero River.

This extended walk takes you deeper into the forest and lasts about an hour.

You can find detailed information on the Mangawhero Forest Walk on the DOC website.

Did you know? Ohakune used to have a reputation as New Zealand’s Carrot Capital.

In the 1980s, the Ohakune Growers Association placed this iconic giant carrot in Ohakune, which has since become an attraction as a unique vegetable-themed playground.

This fun and unique playground is a must-visit for families with children.

Even if you’re not planning to hit the slopes at Turoa Ski Field, a drive along the scenic Ohakune Mountain Road is a must.

This winding road offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, making it a journey in itself.

Some of our favourite photos during our trip to Mount Ruapehu were taken along the mountain roads.

The Great Nature Walks

10. Mangawhero Falls

Just before you reach Turoa Ski Field, make sure to stop at Mangawhero Falls Walk.

This short 5-minute stop offers an expansive view of the mountains and the stunning Mangawhero Falls.

This spot is a favourite of ours, as we love easy walks that reward us with such stunning views.

And for the Lord of the Rings fans, Mangawhero Falls was used as a filming location for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

The falls were used to depict the Forbidden Pool, where Gollum is captured by Faramir.

It’s a quick detour that’s well worth your time.

11. Whakapapa Nature Walk

If you’re looking to take a break from the slopes and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Mt Ruapehu, the Whakapapa Nature Walk is a great option.

This easy 15-minute loop trail is conveniently located near most accommodations in Whakapapa Village, making it an accessible activity and one of our favourite things to do in Ruapehu.

The trail offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and is suitable for all ages.

However, if you’re travelling with a baby, we recommend using a baby carrier with hip seat, as the paths, while easy, do have steps.

It’s a great way to stretch your legs, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and appreciate the unique flora and fauna of the region.

12. Tawhai Falls

For a slightly longer walk that’s still family-friendly, consider visiting Tawhai Falls.

This 20-minute loop walk takes you through beautiful native bush to a waterfall that cascades over the edge into a pool below.

Tawhai Falls was the location for “Gollum’s Pool” in the Lord of the Rings film, where Gollum is captured by orcs.

This makes Tawhai Falls a great place to take photos that you can show off to your family and friends.

The trail to Tawhai Falls is well-maintained and relatively easy.

We chose the easiest hikes during our trip to Mount Ruapehu, but there are many amazing tracks for those of you who have older children or are up for a challenge.

13. Mounds Walk

The Mounds Walk is a relatively short and easy hike with stunning views.

This 20-minute loop walk takes you through beautiful native bush to a series of volcanic mounds.

The mounds were formed by debris avalanches during Ruapehu’s periods of volcanic activity thousands of years ago.

The Mounds themselves are quite impressive. They rise up to 10 meters (33 feet) high, and they offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

On a clear day, you can see all the way to Mount Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro.

14. Ridge Walking Track

The Ridge Walking Track is a 40-minute return walk through native bush, tussock grasslands, and volcanic scree slopes.

You’ll get to see Mount Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro in all their glory.

And if you’re lucky and the day is clear, you might even spot the Whanganui River from the distance!

Although the track has a bit of a climb, it’s well worth the effort.

15. Taranaki Falls

Taranaki Falls Loop Track is a favourite among families and casual hikers.

This 2-hour loop walk takes you through tussock grasslands and beech forest, with plenty of native birds to keep you company along the way.

The track is well-maintained, with some inclines that add a bit of a workout, but it’s all worth it when you reach the powerful cascade of water – Taranaki Falls.

Many travellers recommend going anti-clockwise on the track to get the best views of the mountains at the start.

And don’t forget to walk to the bottom of the falls to feel the mist from the spray – it’s a refreshing treat after the walk.

Whakapapanui Walk is a leisurely stroll that’s perfect for families or those looking for a less strenuous activity.

17. Silica Rapids Walking Track

The Silica Rapids Walking Track, a 2.5-hour return walk, offers a unique blend of landscapes, from mountain beech forest to alpine bogs and shrublands.

Silica Rapids is a series of creamy white terraces formed by the deposit of silica from the water.

This track is particularly interesting for those with a curiosity for geology or chemistry, with explanatory panels along the way providing fascinating insights into the formation of the rapids.

It’s also a family-friendly walk with stunning views of the mountain.

18. Tama Lakes Tramping Track

The Tama Lakes Tramping Track is a rewarding but challenging hike.

This 5-6 hour return journey takes you to the Tama Lakes, two explosion craters nestled between Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe.

The views of the lakes and the surrounding landscape are simply breathtaking.

We didn’t do this hike but based on the reviews, the final ascent to the Upper Tama Lake involves scrambling up some loose rocks but is manageable for anyone of average fitness.

One of the highlights is the opportunity to see the Taranaki Falls, a beautiful sight and a great spot to take a break and enjoy the scenery.

Be Mindful of Your Walks

Dress Appropriately: The weather in Mt Ruapehu can be unpredictable, so it’s best to dress in layers. This way, you can add or remove clothing as needed. Don’t forget to pack a waterproof jacket, as rain can come unexpectedly.

Wear Comfortable Shoes: Most walks involve uneven terrain, so sturdy, comfortable footwear is a must. Hiking boots are ideal, but a good pair of walking shoes will also do the trick for the shorter walks.

Stay Hydrated: Always bring plenty of water, especially for the longer walks. It’s easy to get dehydrated, even in cooler weather.

Pack Snacks: Keep your energy levels up with some healthy snacks. Nuts, fruit, and energy bars are all good options.

Sun Protection: Even on cloudy days, the sun in New Zealand can be strong. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen and wear a hat for protection.

Respect the Environment: Remember, you’re a guest in nature. Always stick to the marked paths, don’t disturb the wildlife, and take any rubbish with you.

Check the Weather: Before you set off, check the weather forecast. Some walks may not be safe in bad weather.

Tell Someone Your Plans: Especially for the longer walks, let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to be back.

Remember, safety should always be your top priority. Enjoy the stunning scenery, but always respect the power of nature. Happy walking!
