It’s November, and Christmas is starting to take over. Malls are draped in dazzling decorations, jingle bells are ringing in the background, and Christmas ambience music has somehow found its way onto my YouTube feed.

At home, the kids are busy with Christmas arts & crafts, and the walls are slowly filling up with their Christmas-themed drawings. This has always been the time of the year when it’s really hard to stick to our minimalist lifestyle.

Being from down under, Christmas in New Zealand and Australia is all about road trips, BBQs, markets, beaches and sunshine (well, more like thunders in recent years). Nevertheless, Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere is generally laid-back, simple, and well… green.

If the thought of a sunny, warm-weather Christmas sounds more appealing than a snowy one, you’re in good company.

In this post, we’ll take you through some of the best warm-weather destinations to celebrate Christmas this year in the Southern Hemisphere.

1. Auckland, New Zealand

Let’s kick things off with Auckland, the city I grew up in.

From mid-November onwards, Auckland city comes alive with a series of community events, local parades, and Christmas markets.

My fondest childhood memories of celebrating Christmas in Auckland have to be the annual Christmas in the Park. It’s one of the city’s biggest annual event, attracting tens of thousands each year.

Being in summer, this massive outdoor concert features the best local performances, food stalls, and of course, plenty of festive cheer. It’s a tradition that feels uniquely Auckland.

If you’re planning to go, pack a picnic and make sure to get there early to secure a good spot.

Another Auckland highlight is the annual Auckland Farmers Santa Parade held in the city centre. Families gather to watch vibrant floats, marching bands, and dancers fill the streets.

2. Sydney, Australia

Across the Tasman Sea, Sydney takes things up a notch with its bustling city vibe and lively celebrations.

As Australia’s largest city, Sydney takes Christmas to its iconic harbour. Throughout December, spectacular fireworks light up Darling Harbour every Friday and Saturday night, attracting both locals and tourists from all around the world.

Sydney Santa Spectacular at Blacktown Showgrounds brings holiday magic to life with rides, live shows, and an enchanted forest experience.

For those who love carols, Woolworths Carols in the Domain features top Australian performers in a massive outdoor concert.

Over at St Mary’s Cathedral, the Lights of Christmas dazzles with a magical light show that is a must-see among families.

And if you want to take a selfie with the most dazzling giant Christmas tree, Martin Place is the Instagrammable backdrop.

Of course, Sydney’s beautiful beaches are never far from mind. The famous Bondi Beach, along with many other beach suburbs, often hosts beachside Christmas celebrations.

But honestly, Bondi is overrated and overcrowded. Try Coogee or Manly beach if you want to enjoy a jolly summer Christmas, the Aussie way.

3. Fiji Islands

Next stop is one of my all-time favourite Pacific Island destinations. With over 300 islands to explore, you’re sure to find a postcard-perfect island in Fiji to celebrate a tropical Christmas.

Here are my top recommended islands in Fiji, along with the best places to stay.

Yasawa Islands

The Yasawa Islands truly have pristine waters, like the colours you see on Instagram.

This island is perfect for snorkelling, lazing on white sandy beaches, cultural experiences like kava ceremonies and enjoying a tropical Christmas in paradise.

Where to stay

Blue Lagoon Resort: Offers budget to luxury accommodation. Located near the famous Blue Lagoon with crystal-clear waters. (Lots of hermit crabs during my last stay, many years ago.)

Barefoot Manta Island: Prime location for manta ray snorkelling experiences.

Yasawa Island Resort: High-end luxury experience with cultural activities and mouth-watering food.

Mamanuca Islands

Similar to the Yasawa Islands, Mamanuca Islands are also known for their white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters.

This island is great for marine life spotting, island hopping and water sports. Mamanuca Islands provide a more secluded, warm-weather Christmas experience.

Where to stay

Six Senses Fiji: This luxury resort has a Kids Club with activities like Zumba, weaving, and cooking classes.

Plantation Island Resort: Offers a kids’ club, water park, and multiple dining options. Kids can enjoy free meals and activities.

Castaway Island Resort: Features spacious family bungalows, along with a kids’ club with daily activities.

Malolo Island Resort: Offers educational programs for children at Tia’s Treehouse, and family bures.

Vomo Island Resort: High-end resort featuring a dedicated Kids Village, fantastic snorkelling spots and infinity pool.

Coral Coast

The Coral Coast stands out with its accessible coral reefs and rich cultural experiences. Unlike the secluded Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands, it offers an opportunity for local village visits and diverse activities.

There are many family-friendly resorts on the Coral Coast that provide free non-motorised water sports, perfect for exploration around the beautiful coast.

Where to stay

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort: One of the best family resorts in Fiji.

Shangri-La Yanuca Island: Warm Fijian hospitality, family facilities, water sports and diverse daily programs. (I had the best ever seafood risotto here!)

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa: Beautiful views of Natadola Bay, 18-hole championship golf course and kids’ club.

Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay: Luxury overwater Bure Villas. Children’s playground and snorkelling opportunities.

4. Hawaii, USA

We can’t talk about warm-weather Christmas destinations without mentioning Hawaii! Whether you’re drawn to the bustling energy of Oahu, the serene beaches of Maui, or the unique volcanic landscapes of the Big Island, Hawaii offers a little something for everyone.

Honolulu, Oahu

For those looking to combine vibrant celebrations with a family getaway, Oahu offers the best of both worlds.

The month-long Honolulu City Lights celebration bring dazzling displays, music, and good food to the island.

For a true island experience, try a Christmas Luau – a delicious (and eye-opening) kalua pig feast with hula and fire dancing performances.

Over in Waikiki, don’t miss Santa paddling in on a canoe at Surfing Santa.

December also kicks off whale-watching season, perfect for spotting humpbacks in the wild.

Maui

For a more peaceful escape, Maui is a relaxing mix of tradition and island style.

The island is decked out in vibrant decorations, and its pristine beaches set the stage for the perfect warm-weather Christmas getaway.

On Christmas Eve, you can catch Santa arriving by outrigger canoe at Wailea Beach, a true island twist on holiday cheer.

Big Island

Meanwhile, the Big Island adds a touch of adventure with its stunning black sand beaches and active volcanoes.

Celebrate a tropical Christmas with events like the Kailua-Kona Christmas Parade, featuring local bands and festive floats.

Punalights in Keaau offers a mesmerising, 25-minute long, synchronised light and music show, every night!

The Kona Christmas House is adorned with over 30,000 lights.

And the Waimea Twilight Parade and Ocean View House are both fantastic stops for those looking to experience Big Island’s holiday spirit in full bloom.

The list goes on.

Cape Town is a different kind of summer destination for a warm-weather Christmas. With its Mediterranean climate and stunning scenery, Christmas here means beach days, outdoor markets, and exploring the city’s vibrant culture with a unique South African flair.

The Festive Lights Switch On at Grand Parade marks the start of Christmas with a beautiful display of lights and music.

Cape Town Christmas Spectacular at Hillsong Church brings the Christmas story to life.

For those who love shopping, Cape Town’s Christmas Markets is a one-stop shop for local arts, crafts, and food.

And on Christmas Day, head to Fountains Hotel for a Bibs & Braai lunch, featuring a buffet of South African classics like glazed ham and malva pudding, accompanied by live music. *drools*

6. Buenos Aires, Argentina

As summer sweeps through the Southern Hemisphere over Christmas, Buenos Aires embraces the festive season with street festivals, vibrant lights and late-night family dinners, featuring traditional dishes like asado (BBQs) and torta negra.

You can’t miss Midnight Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Plaza de Mayo that marks the start of Christmas Eve. At midnight, fireworks light up the sky, followed by parties that last until dawn.

For a more luxurious Christmas Eve experience, head to Puerto Madero where you can catch the fireworks while enjoying dinner at one of its upscale restaurants.

Families can take the kids to one of the many parks that offer festive fun. Parque Thays in Recoleta features a Toy Factory, Elf Village, and Santa’s Cabin, while Plaza Intendente Seeber has a carousel, face painting, and live shows.

If you’re looking for stunning holiday decorations and a place to snap some photos, Galerías Pacífico is famous for its giant sparkly Christmas tree.

Last but not least, don’t miss the holiday classic, El Cascanueces (The Nutcracker) at the iconic Teatro Colón.

7. Brazil

For a warm-weather Christmas destination that’s full of energy and festive vibe, Brazil is the place to be.

Rio de Janeiro hosts the world’s largest floating Christmas tree at Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon.

While São Paulo lights up with lively street markets and elaborate holiday displays throughout the city.

Curitiba earns its title as the “capital of Christmas” with its giant trees and cultural events.

And Gramado becomes a magical winter wonderland with its Natal Luz Festival.
