Are you tired of seeing so-called influencers flocking to the same Instagram-famous spots just to post about them?
Sure, the heavily edited shots and keyword-stuffed hashtags catch the attention of sponsors, but more and more millennials are looking for something deeper.
As a family of four, we want to go beyond the picture-perfect views and truly connect with the places we visit.
We appreciate experiencing local cultures, wandering off the beaten path, and finding ways to leave a positive impact wherever we go.
In this post, we’re discussing how millennials are disconnecting from the virtual world and returning to the basics to create lasting memories and genuine bonds abroad.

What Travelling Means for Millennials
Travel has become more than just a break from routine for more and more millennials.
It’s about discovering who we are, learning from the world, and leaving a positive footprint wherever we go.
But that doesn’t mean we don’t crave adventure and a break from the grind.
It’s just that now there’s a deeper consciousness at the back of our minds that travelling is about experiences that challenge us, expand our perspectives, and teach us something new.

Insta-Perfect Imperfectly Beautiful
With the rise of Instagram, Social media has totally changed how we approach travel.
It’s sparked a trend of crafting picture-perfect experiences, where getting that ‘Insta-worthy’ shot feels almost obligatory.
But behind the glossy photos lies the chaos of real life, especially for millennial families travelling with kids.
We once tried to capture the ultimate family beach photo – golden hour, gentle waves, all that magic.
But just as we posed for that ‘one big happy family’ photo, our toddler decided it was the perfect time for a no-reason meltdown.
So much for serenity!

Then there was the time we slogged through mud with a 4-year-old in tow to reach a beautiful waterfall.
Just as we set up the tripod to capture the picture-perfect shot, our daughter decided to investigate this strange toy, nearly sending it into the cascading water.
That heart-stopping moment later prompted me to sell my entire DSLR gear and upgrade to the latest photo smartphone for our travels.
You can read my comparison of DSLRs and smartphones as travel cameras here.

These real, unfiltered moments of family travel remind us of what truly matters while on the road.
We’re learning to embrace the perfectly imperfect moments that tell the true story of our journeys.
The Rise of Travel Families
For millennial families, travel is now a chance to teach kids about the world in ways no classroom can.
Immersing children in different cultures, traditions, and ways of life can foster curiosity, adaptability, and a deep respect for diversity.

Imagine your little one learning to shape handmade pasta in an Italian kitchen or dancing in the vibrant colours of an Andorra festival.
These experiences are not only memorable, but they also shape a child’s understanding of the world, creating a foundation of open-mindedness and adventure that stays with them for life.
In a world that often feels divided, these experiences remind us – and our kids – that we may be different, but we’re all connected.
That’s why I love transforming our travel stories into picture books that instill a sense of wonder in young readers around the world.

By the way…
Did you know? We have our very own children’s picture book, written based on our real travel adventures.
Chasing Unique Local Experiences
In their pursuit of genuine connections, millennials are putting authenticity at the top of the list.
We’re chasing experiences that bring us closer to the local lifestyle. This could mean staying in local holiday homes, dining at local food stalls, or taking part in cultural activities.
By soaking up the local culture, millennial travel becomes a journey of deeper understanding of the places we visit, rather than just another bucket list item ticked off.
It’s about feeling the destination – through the flavours, stories, and rhythms of daily life.

Simplicity in Travel
Minimalism and slow travel are becoming the new norm for millennials.
By packing light and leaving behind the unnecessary, we free ourself up to focus on the moment.
Instead of rushing around trying to tick off as many tourist hotspots as possible, we’re taking a step back, finding joy in the small and unexpected moments and spending quality time with those that matters.
It’s about embracing the simplicity of the journey and allowing it to unfold naturally. The idea isn’t to see it all but to experience it fully.
Slow travel allows you to truly savour the essence of each destination, discover hidden gems, learn about the local culture, and take the time to absorb, process, and digest your new experiences.

Tech-Driven Travel
Travel in today’s world has completely changed the way millennials travel. We’re very lucky to live in a time where apps make travel a breeze.
Sites like Booking.com, Agoda and Expedia make it super easy to secure flights, hotels, and entire travel packages.
When it comes to staying in holiday homes or unique accommodations, Vrbo let us live like locals, putting us in the heart of the action.
For those looking for authentic experiences, Viator and GetYourGuide connect you with local tours that let you see a place from a local’s perspective.
Prefer to explore at your own pace? Turo lets you rent cars P2P, giving you the freedom to cruise around without the stress of hiring a car.
And of course, there are dozens of apps out there that translate, helping us break down the communication barrier.
Thanks to a host of travel platforms and apps, getting in touch with locals and businesses is now as simple as a tap on our screens.
These apps not only makes travel more convenient but also opens up a world where we can connect with other travellers who share our interests, values, and passions.
All this has made millennial travel richer and more rewarding.

The Future of Millennial Travel with AI
As we look to the future, one of the most exciting aspects of travel is the changes that AI will bring.
AI could take into account personal preferences and past travel experiences, suggesting personalised trips and activities that align with our interests.

Imagine being guided to the perfect activities, places, and itineraries that are an ideal fit for you and your family.
Or a time when translation apps could not only translate words but also recognise accents and cultural nuances, allowing for seamless real-time conversations.
And of course, it goes without saying that there will be endless new ways to make money while travelling abroad.
Why Sustainable Travel Matters to Us
Sustainable and ethical travel is becoming a big deal for millennials. We want to make sure we’re doing our part to protect the planet while we explore it.
We’re more aware than ever of the impact our travels can have, and that awareness shapes every decision we make, from where we go to how we get there.
Instead of heading to overcrowded hotspots, we’re venturing off the beaten path, exploring less touristy destinations to mitigate the impacts of over-tourism.
In fact, this growing love for sustainable travel is what led us to stumble upon the charming city of Dinant in Belgium.

Then, there were the hidden castles, like the Vêves Castle, nestled into the landscape. The discovery of these enchanting places made our trip even more magical.

From choosing eco-friendly accommodations to supporting local businesses, we want our future generations to enjoy the same beautiful places we do.
This reminds me of the time when we stayed at a holiday park near Lake Zurich.
The holiday park had its own veggie patch, and the farm animals roamed freely on a vast stretch of land, with mountain silhouettes as the backdrop.
Each morning, we would wake up to the sound of a rooster crowing, experiencing the simple, rural life that we often see in movies but rarely get to enjoy ourselves.

Staying at that holiday park made us feel a part of nature. It was an unplanned experience that resonated with our love for authentic, meaningful, and sustainable travel.
Travelling with a Purpose
We’ve started to think more deeply about how our adventures impact the communities we visit.
Rather than simply soaking up what the destination has to offer, we’ve made it a goal to give back as well.
During one of our trips to Vietnam, we planned to visit an orphanage and brought gifts for the children.
After a tuk-tuk tour around the city in swirling dust, our driver admitted he was lost.

So instead of taking us to the orphanage, he detoured to a school for underprivileged kids instead.
At first, we weren’t sure what to expect. One of the staff there – a young boy – showed us around the school and gave us a rundown on the conditions of the students.
We spent the afternoon learning about how unfair life can be and, conversely, how privileged we are.
The smiles on the kids’ faces when we gave them a pack of candies left a lasting impression on our hearts. It turned out to be the most heartwarming part of our trip.
That day, we didn’t just see Vietnam; we felt it. We made a small difference in the lives of others.

If this post has helped you, a cup of coffee is all it takes to make my day. Thanks a latte!
